Is Meekness a Weakness?

I shared a post on my Twitter account talking about the intensity I have when I am with people, particularly in a conversation, and I wanted to make a clarification on a word in that statement that has caused me to think a little more about what the real definition of that word was.  In this particular quote, the word, "meek," was used in a derogatory sense, stating that anyone who is meek is weak.  Perhaps in some situations that is the case, but I believe there are times when meekness is more of a strength than a weakness.  I don't mind being considered a meek person in those terms.

Some dictionaries define meekness as a form of submissiveness.  There may be some truth behind this, but in reality, there's a lot more to meekness than being a spineless person.  There is one dictionary (Merriam-Webster) that offered three different definitions of the word.

  1. Enduring injury with patience and without resentment
  2. Deficient in spirit and courage
  3. Not violent or strong
I still don't believe this offers a completely accurate definition.  Meekness, as I observe it, involves elements of humility, faith, and hope among other things.  It's a complicated word to accurately define.  When I think of true meekness, I think about the following situations that I have observed:

  • I saw it with my grandmother (and us) as we sat beside her a few days before she passed away.  It was a sweet final goodbye that brought us peace concerning the upcoming separation.
  • It came to so many friends and family who had to battle cancer.  Their patience and long-suffering during those difficult times were truly amazing.  Many of them lost their battle, yet their life ended being the same amazing people as they ever were.
  • It exists with my disabled brother as he goes day by day completely entrusting us with taking care of his needs.  His life has never been an easy one, and I'm so amazed at how patiently he puts up with us and all of the things he's had to deal with.  Honestly, this little guy's my hero.
  • Friends and neighbors who have been in serious accidents have been wonderful examples.  I've watched as they patiently endure the pain of recovery, and sometimes permanent debilitation for the rest of their lives continue to live on with admirable courage and beautiful outlooks on life.
  • I see examples of it in my own life and with others when there are choices made that weren't easy and having the willingness to submit to whatever happens as a consequence.  Most of them end up being worth it.

Do you seriously think these situations are moments of weakness?  I would ask people to stop accusing the meek of being weaklings, and notice the strengths, for we could all use those qualities to make life just a little better for everyone.

There is a quote I'm seeing a lot of, "Meekness is not weakness.  It is strength under control."  I love that definition.
